Course Overview
The AMI Montessori 3–6 Orientation Certificate (formerly the Assistants Course) is a comprehensive introduction to the Montessori approach for children aged three to six years. This course provides a deep dive into the philosophy and practical methods used to support the "Primary" stage of development, where children transition from unconscious to conscious learners.

What You Will Learn
This course covers the foundational pillars of the Montessori method for the preschool years:
Theory & Psychology: Understanding the "Absorbent Mind" and the child’s natural path to self-construction.
The Prepared Environment: How to set up and maintain a classroom that fosters order, coordination, and independence.
The Adult’s Role: Learning how to assist the lead teacher and interact with children without interfering with their concentration.
Freedom and Limits: Balancing the child’s individual choice with the social cohesion of the group.
Developmental Areas: Insights into Grace and Courtesy, the development of movement, and language acquisition.
Course Format & Requirements
The program totals 60 hours and is delivered in a part-time, live online format:
33 hours of live online lectures and interactive discussions (active participation with cameras on is required). Participants must maintain at least 90% attendance in these sessions to qualify for certification.
27 hours of independent study, including guided reading assignments, video resources and observation techniques.
Practical Work: Completion of 9 hours of child observation and the submission of three written essays.
Certification
Upon successful completion, students are awarded the AMI Montessori 3–6 Orientation Certificate. The certificate is issued by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), the organization founded by Maria Montessori. This is an internationally recognized credential that certifies the holder to work as an assistant in an AMI Montessori 3-6 classroom.

AMI Trainer Profile
Aparna Iyer
Aparna Iyer brings her rich experience of nearly two decades of working with children and parents and leading a team of teachers. She obtained her AMI Primary Diploma in the year 2008 and soon after, established the Montessori division in National Public School, Chennai working as a teacher and coordinator for over a decade. She is currently the Director of Pedagogy at Global Montessori Centre, Gopalapuram & Perumbakkam, Chennai (A Part of the NPS Group of Institutions). Additionally, Aparna is also the 3-6 Director of Training, at JFA MTTC, Kolkata, India, and part of the team that has worked to revive AMI training in Kolkata after nearly 40 years.
Aparna serves as a National examiner for AMI Primary courses, having examined students in India and China. She has done her AMI Orientation courses at 0-3, 6-12 and 12-18 age levels. She believes in continuous professional development and has also undertaken the Montessori Core Principles and the Montessori Administrators Courses.
Aparna Iyer first started working with young children informally, as a volunteer with an International Peace Organization, conducting values and culture sessions for children. This led her to work formally in a Lebanese Kindergarten School in Ghana, in the year 2006, where she lived at that time. During her work in the kindergarten, she intuitively began to search for a meaningful pedagogy which led her to her Montessori journey from which she has never looked back. She is passionate about reaching Montessori to all.
