Course Overview
The AMI Montessori 6–12 Orientation Certificate (formerly known as the Assistants’ Course) focuses on the "second plane" of development—childhood from ages six to twelve. This course explores how the Montessori method adapts to meet the elementary child's shift toward reasoning, imagination, and a deep interest in social justice and the wider world.

What You Will Learn
The curriculum examines the unique characteristics of the elementary-aged child, including:
Cosmic Education: Understanding the interdisciplinary curriculum that shows children how all things in the universe are interconnected.
The Psychological characteristics: Reasoning Mind, Imagination How to support the child's move from concrete learning to abstract thinking and the power of imagination.
Social Development: Navigating the "herd instinct" and the development of morality and social responsibility.
The Prepared Environment: How the elementary classroom acts as a "base camp" for "Going Out" into the community to learn.
The Role of the Assistant: How to support the lead teacher in managing large-group projects and fostering a collaborative atmosphere.
Course Format & Requirements
The program totals 60 hours and is delivered in a part-time, live online format:
33 hours of live online lectures and interactive discussions (active participation with cameras on is required). Participants must maintain at least 90% attendance in these sessions to qualify for certification.
27 hours of independent study, including reading assignments, video resources and observation techniques.
Practical Work: Completion of 9 hours of observation and the submission of three written essays.
Certification
Upon successful completion, students are awarded the AMI Montessori 6-12 Orientation Certificate. The certificate is issued by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), the organization founded by Maria Montessori. This is an internationally recognized credential that certifies the holder to work as an assistant in an AMI Montessori 6–12 classroom.
