AMI 6-12 Language Workshop

So often, we think of Montessori language as just grammar boxes and sentence analysis. But it is so much more! In this this workshop, while we investigate the materials we will also explore how to transform the Elementary English curriculum into a living, breathing, and enjoyable experience for children.

Workshop Goal

Every participant leaves with both the why and the how—philosophical understanding paired with practical, implementation strategies for the Montessori language arts curriculum for children aged 6-12.


Scope of the Workshop

This workshop focuses on the comprehensive Language Arts curriculum for the 6-12 classroom. It will cover the foundational "Great Stories" that inspire the study of language, followed by the practical, sequenced materials for grammar, word study, sentence analysis, interpretive reading, and the writing process. The workshop will also explore how language is an integral tool for learning across all other subject areas, from history and geography to science and mathematics, as a part of Cosmic Education.


WORKSHOP OUTLINE


1. FOUNDATIONS & THE GREAT LESSONS

A. Opening: The "Explosion" into Language

  • Welcome and the stories that lead to Language

  • The developmental shift from the Children's House to the Elementary child's "why" and "how".

B. Cosmic Education & The Story of Language

  • The role of "Cosmic Education" in providing a framework for all learning .

  • The Great Lesson: The Story of Communication in Signs . The history of human communication: from gestures and pictographs to the alphabet.

  • The Great Lesson: The Story of the English Language/ Indonesian

  • Relating the history of language to other subjects (history, writing systems, ancient civilizations) .


2. THE GRAMMAR & WORD STUDY CONTINUUM

A. Word Study

  • Deep Dive: The Word Study Tower. Synonyms, Antonyms, Homophones, Compound Words, Prefixes, and Suffixes .

  • Activities that move from concrete cards to abstract application in writing.

B. Grammar: The Function of Words

  • Key Experiences: Introduction to each part of speech using dramatic and concrete experiences / Oral Introduction to manipulation activities.

  • Grammar Boxes: Introduction to the material and its progression (Article, Noun, Adjective, Verb, Preposition, Adverb, Pronoun, Conjunction, Interjection) .

  • Grammar command cards and their role in making grammar a dynamic, physical activity.

C. Sentence Analysis

  • Moving from words to the structure of sentences.

  • The Sentence Analysis material: identifying the logical parts of a sentence (Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, etc.) .

  • How sentence analysis enhances both reading comprehension and writing clarity.


3. READING, WRITING & INTEGRATION

A. Interpretive Reading & Comprehension

  • The progression from word to text.

  • Command Cards: Acting out commands to prove comprehension .

  • Interpretive Reading: Adding adverbs to change the meaning of a command (e.g. "Open the door slowly") .

  • Fostering a love of literature: selecting books for the classroom and guiding reading.

B. The Writing Workshop

  • Process Writing: Composing vs. Recording.

  • The mechanics of writing: Handwriting, Spelling, and Punctuation.

  • Using grammar and word study knowledge to improve writing style.

  • Research and report writing as an expression of knowledge across the curriculum.

C. Language Across the Curriculum

  • Language as a tool for discovery in History, Geography, and Science .

  • How "The Great Stories" create a launching pad for independent research in other subjects.


4. IMPLEMENTATION MASTERY

A. Classroom Scenarios Workshop

Small Group Problem-Solving: Each group selects one challenge scenario:

  • The "Stuck" Child (child isn't progressing with grammar or reading)

  • Mixed-Age Presentation (how to present a lesson to a group with a wide range of abilities)

  • Material Resistance (a child refuses to use grammar boxes)

  • Assessment Without Testing (how to track progress in language)

  • Supporting the Struggling Speller
