Dr. Montessori developed her core philosophy with this age group and the course deals with seminal ideas of her pedagogy.

DELIVERY FORMAT:

This course will be a blended model.

SCHEDULE:

COURSE CONTENT:

The syllabus covers the application of the Montessori Method to the education of children from 3 to 6 years of age.

There are six main sections:

THEORY:

In the lectures on child psychology, the main emphasis is laid on the psychological development of the child, the successive phases of his development and the characteristics of these phases. The child is thus viewed as the builder of the human personality. Special consideration is given to the formative powers of the young child and the construction of the human faculties which leads to all round development.

PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS:

The practical demonstration lectures deal with the function and presentation of the materials offered to children from 3 to 6 years of age in a Montessori environment.

SUPERVISED PRACTICE:

Along with lectures there will be practice classes where students in smaller groups will handle the material, and acquire the technique of its presentation. The students will be guided in this practice to help make connections between theoretical principles and the related practice.

OBSERVATION AND TEACHING PRACTICE:

Students will observe the Montessori Approach in action in various Montessori schools in the city of which they have to keep records. They will also do teaching practice working directly with the children under the guidance of a trained adult.

CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT:

Students will need to take the responsibility of the environment just as they would when they are with children. This is an essential aspect of the training to develop the students’ eye for the care and maintenance of the material.

REFERENCE FOLDERS:

Students will be expected to submit their work at regular intervals during the course. This will include synopsis of lectures and four material reference albums containing descriptions of various parts of the materials, their aims and the technique of presenting them to the child.

All course work will be required to be submitted online and therefore, students will need to have good internet access and sound computer skills and indicated earlier.

Students will also be expected to prepare samples of some of the material.

EMAILS, INTERNET AND SCANNING:

Students will need regular access to email and the internet throughout the course. All assignments will need to be submitted electronically. Students will be required to scan and upload their work.

LANGUAGE:

All lectures will be in English. Course work will need to be presented in English both orally and in writing. It will be necessary for students to take comprehensive lecture notes, read Montessori books, write original essays and prepare assignments based on course information. Students will also be required to explain theoretical principles during the Oral examination

ATTENDANCE:

Students must have a minimum of 90% attendance of the course including time taken off due to illness. Attendance records will be meticulously maintained throughout the year. In case of absence, students must notify the Training Team in writing, at least one day in advance. In case of a sudden illness the student must inform the Training Team by email immediately.

EXAMINATIONS:

At the end of the course, students will take two written examinations. Paper A will be on child psychology and Montessori principles on child development. Paper B will be on Montessori materials and their underpinning examination principles and the practical areas. The duration of each will be approximately 3 hours.

Students will also take oral examinations in each practical area. During the oral examination, the student will demonstrate the use of a material in each area and discuss with the examiner the underpinning principles. The duration of the oral examinations will be approximately 3 hours.
